Newborn Photography Sessions in Gloucester
It’s so true what they say about time flying when you have a baby. Your precious sleepy newborn will become an alert, moving mini-you in no time at all! Newborn photography is the perfect way to cherish the memories of those first few weeks in your baby’s life – in all their sleepy, snuggly glory.
I know how precious those first few weeks are and how much courage it can take to leave the house with your new baby. When you come into my studio, I’ll do my absolute best to make you feel at home and offer you the chance for some well-earned rest while I work my magic with your little one.
I wouldn’t trust my baby with just anyone, and I wouldn’t expect you to either. I like to speak to my clients on the phone before booking so that you can get a feel for who I am and to make sure that we’re a good fit for each other. However, you can rest assured that I am fully trained and insured to safely handle and pose newborn babies. I am also trained in paediatric first aid so your baby will be in safe hands.
Highly recommended! When we arrived I was a little apprehensive as it was my first outing with my newborn, however Katie greeted us and showed us into her studio. I felt at ease immediately, she asked if I was happy with the colours and props used and then began to work her magic. My baby was trying to fight going to sleep but after an hour she finally went to sleep thanks to Katie’s patience. A couple of weeks later she called us back to view and choose the pictures we wanted, we were speechless with all of the pictures she took! I would like to thank Katie for her excellent service and for capturing the moments we will cherish for the rest of our lives.

What to expect during your newborn photoshoot
Newborn photoshoots are for babies aged 7-28 days. If your baby is a little older, you might want to take a look at an older baby photoshoot.
BEFORE
I recommend booking in for your newborn photoshoot as early as your 20 week scan. We’ll book a provisional photoshoot date approximately 7-14 days after your due date which we can move if needs be. A £100 deposit is required to secure your booking, which will be credited towards your final order. Then we can get to the fun part of planning your photoshoot!
ON THE DAY
Newborn photoshoots are scheduled for up to four hours, giving us plenty of time to feed and settle your little one before we get to work on all the cute poses and wraps that we’ll be using during your session. We’ll be sure to get some photos of the rest of the family too. Please don’t worry about getting in front of the camera so soon after birth, everything we do is designed to make you look at your best.
AFTER
A few weeks after your photoshoot, you’ll be invited back to the studio to see your beautiful gallery for the first time. You’ll get to see and touch the unique pieces of wall art on offer and see exactly how they’ll look on the walls of your home. This is when you’ll choose the packages and products you’d like to buy and make your final purchase.

Newborn Photoshoot FAQs
If you would like to understand more about the process, or have any concerns, please see my frequently asked questions about newborn photography below.
Before your photoshoot
Can I pay for my session in instalments?
Yes! You are more than welcome to pay for your preferred photography package in monthly instalments in the run up to your session. Please let me know if you’d like to take advantage of this when booking your session. Payment plans can also be used to pay for your products after your view and order session, however no photographic products will be received until your invoice is paid in full.
ME/MY PARTNER/MY CHILD ARE POORLY, CAN WE STILL COME FOR OUR APPOINTMENT?
I have to be really careful not to pass on any nasty germs to the small babies that enter my studio so, please get in touch to reschedule. You won’t be charged and it’s much better to be safe rather than sorry.
WHEN SHOULD I BOOK MY Newborn PHOTOSHOOT FOR?
Of course we have no idea when your new arrival is going to, well, arrive, so we’ll aim for about 5-7 days after your due date. Then if we need to move things around, it’s no problem.
WHAT IS THE DEPOSIT FOR?
DO I HAVE TO BUY FROM ONE OF YOUR PACKAGES?
DO YOU USE FLASH FOR NEWBORN PHOTOGRAPHY?
Yes! Although there are lots of photographers who choose to use natural light for newborn photography, I prefer the control that studio lighting gives me to really create the style of image that I love and am known for.
You needn’t worry though, the very short duration and unfocused nature of the flashes make flash photography perfectly safe for your newborn baby’s eyes.
DOES IT COST ANY EXTRA FOR TWINS/MULTIPLES?
No, not at all! I’d love to welcome you with all your children into the studio!
HOW LONG IS A NEWBORN PHOTOSHOOT?
HOW MUCH IS A NEWBORN PHOTOSHOOT?
Prices for newborn photoshoots vary wildly. And whilst I understand that cost is likely to be a factor in choosing your photographer, I would highly recommend that you do not base your decision solely on price.
- Safety is paramount. You’d be shocked by how many people buy a ‘proper’ camera and call themselves a professional newborn photographer, without ever having completed any training on how to safely handle and pose a newborn. Newborn photography training costs hundreds of pounds; make sure your photographer has invested in theirs.
- Your baby will never be this small again. If capturing this precious time is important to you, don’t scrimp on your photographs. Because if you make the wrong choice and find you don’t like them, you may never get the opportunity to retake them. Choose a photographer who has a great, consistent style that you LOVE.
- There’s a lot to be said for gut instinct. Meet or at least talk to your photographer before booking and make sure you get a good feeling from them. After all, you’ll be handing over your most precious creation!

On the day
Where is your studio?
My studio is located at my home in Longlevens, moments off the A40 and M5 motorway, making it ideally situated for clients in Gloucester, Cheltenham and further afield.
Can I have my hair and make-up done?
Yes absolutely! I work with a fabulous hair and make-up artist who specialises in beautiful, natural make-up. Simply let me know you’d like to book when you get in touch.
What should I expect from the session?
You’ll likely feel nervous when you arrive, but honestly, we’ll soon be having a laugh (at my expense probably) and you’ll start to feel at ease. I’ve got a selection of outfits available to make you look and feel at your best… and if you’re feeling brave towards the end of the session, we could try some nude silhouettes too because they really do make a beautiful piece of art. You don’t have to do anything that you feel uncomfortable with. And if you want to bring a chaperone, that’s absolutely fine. Extra helpers are always handy!
I’ll aim to have your photographs ready for you in about two weeks but if you don’t want to wait that long, you’ll get the option of a sneak peek on Facebook that very evening. If you booked a full maternity session, you’ll be welcomed back to the studio to view your photographs and take home your beautiful prints and USB. For the mini session, you’ll simply receive a link to an online gallery so you can download your photographs from the comfort of your own home.
If you’d like to read a more detailed account of what it’s like to have a maternity photoshoot with Moments by Katie Mitchell, click here.
After your photoshoot
When will my photographs be ready?
Please note that some mini sessions and event photography packages may not include a personal view and order session; in these cases you will be provided with an online gallery from which to download your photographs.
What happens after my photoshoot?
If you can’t wait that long, you’ll be offered the opportunity of a sneak peek of one of your photographs on Facebook the evening of your photoshoot. Please note that I need your consent to use your images in this manner, so if you have not already opted into this within your contract, you may be asked to complete a model release form.
At your view and order appointment, you’ll be shown a beautiful, customised slideshow of all of your photographs. You’ll be reminded of the packages available and shown the art of the possible when it comes to wall art. And then it’s up to you to choose how you’d like to proceed. There’s never any pressure and, of course, if you don’t fall in love with your photographs, I will happily refund your deposit. Thankfully I can report that 100% of my clients have loved their photographs!
Orders are to be made at the view and order session so please make sure all decision makers can attend. I accept cash or debit card and can also offer payment plans if necessary.
Do I have to decide on my final order at the Reveal appointment?
Ideally, yes. The purpose of the Reveal session is for you to sit back and enjoy your photographs and decide which collection is right for you. Additional Reveal appointments may be requested, however a booking fee will apply.
What is the charity donation?
Will you use my images?
I wrote a blog post which goes into a little more detail about this here.
