Risks of AI Brand Photos: Why Real Photography Builds Genuine Trust

A behind the scenes picture of Michelle having her photo taken.

AI-generated headshots are suddenly everywhere… and to be fair, some of them are really convincing! They’re quick, affordable and can feel like an easy win for small business owners trying to get visible online.

But if you’re building a business around real relationships and a premium service, presenting a version of you that isn’t quite real will only serve to undermine the trust you’ve been working so hard to build.

I recently found myself in a Facebook group flooded with business owners showing off their newly generated AI brand photos (not at all what I was in there for but there we go!). And, honestly? Some of them were really impressive – they looked polished, professional and even had me wondering whether this was the beginning of the end for brand photography!

But after sitting with it for a while (and thrashing it out with ChatGPT 😂), I realised there are some really important things that AI can’t replace – more so than ever in this filtered and artificially enhanced world.

In this post I’ll go through some of the pros and cons of using AI brand imagery, including some of the risks of AI brand photos you might not have thought about, so you can decide for yourself what’s right for you and your business.

What are AI brand photos?

AI brand photography involves feeding existing images of yourself into a tool such as Midjourney or Headshot Pro which then uses AI to generate new photos with different scenes or actions. You use a text prompt to let it know what you want, such as you at a desk in a nice office, or something a bit more aspirational, like sipping champagne on a private jet!

Imagine uploading a selfie and within minutes you’ve got a whole bunch of different versions of yourself dressed in designer outfits, posed like a TED talk speaker or placed on the front cover of Forbes. It’s pretty impressive.. but it is completely made up!

When AI Has Its Place

AI-generated images can be a really useful tool when you’re just starting out in business, you’re testing new ideas, or you just need some quick and affordable imagery for your social media posts or a pitch. It’s also brilliant for creating metaphorical or conceptual images to support your messaging. Here’s one I made earlier:

Running a business without professional brand photographs feels like showing up to a black-tie event in your pyjamas – you might be the best at what you do, but no one’s going to take you seriously.

AI brand images are fast, budget-friendly, and – as many of my readers may appreciate – you don’t need any kind of camera confidence! And for some, AI might be just the nudge they need to get them visible in the first place, which is great. But it should be a stopgap, not a replacement.

Once your business grows – especially if you charge premium prices or want to attract clients who value quality and authenticity – real brand photography is essential. It’s the difference between quick visuals and genuine connection.

How to spot AI generated images

AI generated images are everywhere at the moment, especially when it comes to adverts and fake news articles, but now the trend for AI brand images is starting to really make an appearance on social media and even on people’s websites! At first glance, many AI generated photos can look pretty decent, but there’s usually some tell-tale signs such as:

  • Weird hands or extra fingers
  • Gibberish text on books or in the background
  • Awkward or impossible body poses

As you can see in this image, these red flags might not jump out at you immediately… but once you spot something, you can’t unsee it!

The Trade-offs of Using AI For Brand Imagery

But after years of photographing small business owners, I know that real photos spark connection, build trust and bring unexpected benefits that go far beyond those pretty and polished images. Here’s what you could be missing out on when you rely solely on AI images.

AI images lack personality and connection

Yes those AI-generated images look clean and polished, but they lack your personality, the passion in your expression when you talk about what you do or the sparkle in your eyes when you give a genuine smile – all things that help to build a genuine connection with your audience.

Brand photography shows genuine smiles and mannerisms

AI imagery can hurt your credibility

Platforms such as LinkedIn and Facebook have already started flagging AI-generated content online. If a potential client spots that your headshot has been flagged as “AI-generated”, it could seriously damage your credibility. Even if you think the image looks like you, your audience won’t know any better. They’ll be wondering:

  • Is this person even real?
  • Why aren’t they sharing real photos of themselves?
  • What else might be fake?

It creates a disconnect with the real you

Showing up on social media with a flawless AI image, but then showing up for a discovery call looking completely different will cause people to hesitate, even if they can’t put their finger on why.

You’re missing out on real growth

One of the most underrated benefits of a real brand photoshoot is what it does for you. It’s not just about having a polished appearance online; my clients tell me they feel so much more confident, and proud to show up online as the expert they are. AI won’t give you that; if anything, it’ll make the imposter syndrome even worse, as it reinforces the idea that the real you isn’t good enough to share.

There’s a privacy cost to consider

When you upload your photos to AI platforms, you’re not just sharing pictures, you’re handing over personal information in the form of biometric data – the unique facial features and details that identify you as you. Many platforms don’t make it clear how this data is stored or used, and it could mean that your face is used to train new AI models, or be sold or exposed in data breaches online without your knowledge. It’s worth thinking about who really owns your face once it’s in the AI system – and if you’re comfortable with that.

Real photos don’t just build trust – they can directly impact your business success

When your images show genuine personality and authenticity, clients feel connected and are more likely to buy from you. Authenticity helps position you as a premium provider, meaning you can justify higher prices because your visuals match the quality and care you put into what you do. AI photos might look polished, but they can also cheapen your brand and confuse your message. Having an authentic, real and consistent visual brand will help you stand out and grow your business.

Real Photography Will Only Become More Valuable

There’s no doubt in my mind that AI generated imagery is getting better all the time, and those weird glitches of extra fingers will soon become a thing of the past. It’ll be harder than ever to tell what’s real and what’s fake at a glance.

But that’s exactly why real photos will become more valuable. They show the real you in your actual workspace (not some generic designer office) with skin that isn’t flawless but is authentically you. Being real in this increasingly filtered world is what will help you stand out and create genuine connections with your audience.

As AI-generated images flood our screens, real photography will become the unique asset that helps you stand out. The digital world is changing fast, with new rules, flags, and ethical questions around AI content too. Having real photographs completely sidesteps these risks – and you can use them however you see fit. Investing in brand photography now might not be the most budget-friendly option, but it’s a strategic move that will protect your brand’s integrity and keep you more connected with your audience in the long term.

What You Get from a Real Brand Photoshoot

A brand photoshoot isn’t just about having a nice LinkedIn headshot. It’s about creating a bank of visuals that feel authentically you. When we work together, you’ll get:

  • Confidence on camera (I guide you through everything – no awkward posing!)
  • A relaxed, fun session that doesn’t feel like a chore
  • Images you’ll actually love using (and not just make do with)
  • Photos that tell your story (not just show your face)
  • Content that lasts months, not just a quick social post

If you do use AI while building your business, own it. Be transparent. But remember – as you grow and charge premium prices, your clients will expect authenticity. Getting flagged for an AI brand photograph when you’re positioning yourself as a premium service provider is not a good look.
