What Photos Will I Get From a Newborn Photoshoot?

A behind the scenes picture of Michelle having her photo taken.

If you’ve never booked a session before, you’re likely asking: “What photos will I get from a newborn photoshoot?”

Is it all posed photos? Will you be in them too? What if you don’t feel camera-ready?

The short answer is: you’ll get a mix of family moments, gently posed photographs, and personal details that tell your story – not just what your baby looked like, but what this time felt like.

Family and Sibling Photos (We Start Here for a Reason)

Every session involves family and sibling photos and we usually do these at the start once baby is fed and hopefully drifting off to sleep. This helps baby to settle down and adapt to the environment, while they still feel nice and close to you. It’s something I’ve found works best in almost every session.

When there are older kids involved – toddlers in particular – doing the family photos at the start means we’re getting the best out of them and their generally short attention spans. Once we’ve got those family and sibling photos, the older children are free to leave; lots of parents take advantage of this, with dads taking them home, or to nursery for example, so you can enjoy the rest of your session without worrying about them getting restless. They are, of course, welcome to stay if you’d prefer.

You’re also welcome to get anyone else involved. Grandparents, cousins, you name it!

Some parents prefer not to be in their newborn photos. But I am a big advocate for capturing those early moments with your new baby – they tend to matter far more than people realise at the time.

Photos Even If You Don’t Feel Camera-Ready

Silhouette photos like these are great for when you aren’t feeling photo-ready on the day, which does happen. Often mums in this case arrive not wanting to have their photo taken – but I always try and convince them to give a shot like this a go. There’s nothing to lose – if you don’t love it, you don’t have to choose it. But almost every mum I’ve done this with has been surprised by how much she loves the result… and relieved she didn’t skip it.

Classic Curled-Up Newborn Photos

Depending how sleepy baby is after the family photos, we’ll go straight to the posing table, to get the cute photos like these, that capture that curled-up, sleepy stage while they’re still naturally settling into those womb-like positions.

Wrapped Baby Photos (Perfect for Settling)

We’ll also get some gorgeous wrapped up photos too so you’ve got a good mix of photographs in your gallery. Wrapping babies creates a cosy, secure feeling and is a really helpful way to comfort babies who are a little unsettled, or need a bit of encouragement falling asleep.

We’ll tailor the colours to your preferences, but my heart is definitely with deep, rich colours like this! (We did this one in the same fabric as mum’s dress from her maternity session!)

Photos That Tell Your Story

This is the part that makes your photos feel like yours, not just a standard newborn gallery.

Before every session, we’ll spend some time together getting to know each other and understanding what’s important to you to capture. I love to tell stories through my photos, by including colours, heirlooms, props that make your photos truly ‘you’.

Some are subtle…

Some less so!

If you’d like me to, we can also include tributes to the fertility journey that you’ve been on, or your beautiful rainbow baby. Some families find this a meaningful touch, others prefer to keep those aspects private; I’ll only ever do what you’re comfortable with. We’ll talk this through during your consultation.

The ‘They Were This Small’ Photos

These are the photos that give you real perspective – the ones you look back on and realise just how tiny they actually were.

Every Session Is Slightly Different

Because my sessions are tailored to your family, and because they’re baby-led, no two galleries are ever the same – but every session includes the key moments you won’t want to miss.

What You’ll Walk Away With

Most parents come in thinking they’re just getting a few nice photos.

But what they leave with is something much bigger – a record of a moment that disappears far too quickly.

I make sure you don’t miss the parts that matter most.

If you’re starting to think about your own newborn session, this should give you a feel for the kind of photos you’ll come away with.

And if you’d like to see how the session itself works behind the scenes, I’ve got a guide that walks you through that too here. Worried that your session might not go as you expect?
