If you’ve followed me for a while, you’ll know that I always bang on about the importance of first impressions – and the need to ‘stop the scroll’. But every time we’re on our phones, we’re bombarded with different people, businesses and information (soooo much information!). So how do you stand out from the crowd and establish a deeper connection with your ideal clients?
Well, with me being a photographer, you might be unsurprised to read that it might involve photography, although here I’m specifically talking about storytelling through photography. Professional photos aren’t just about looking pretty; they’re powerful tools that can help communicate your brand story, showcase your personality and forge a genuine connection with your audience.
The emotional impact of visuals:
As humans, our eyes are super fast at understanding what they see in front of them. In the blink of an eye (literally – we’re talking milliseconds), your brain can grasp the meaning of an image. And at the same time, the part of our brain that deals with our emotions lights up too, meaning photos can trigger feelings such as happiness, excitement or even fear (depending on the image!!). (Fun fact: Photos can even cause physical reactions such as a faster heartbeat or sweaty palms!)
I think it’s fair to say that this is powerful stuff. Choosing the right photos for your brand can invoke specific emotions in your audience and create a stronger connection with them.
How do photos tell a story?
OK, I hear you ask, but how do photographs actually tell a story?
Well the idea is that your photographs set the scene, capturing a vision of you and your authentic self and giving your audience a chance to discover and connect with the person behind the business. Your photos can convey your personality and warmth, and (given we’ve evolved to be able to quickly recognise faces and distinguish between friends and enemies (and potential mates!)), there’s a lot to be said for a simple, friendly smile in your photos! Professional photos can also project confidence and, thanks to the halo effect (which I talk more about here), can also convey a sense of professionalism and attention to detail, reassuring potential clients that you take your business seriously.
Behind the scenes photos can tell a story through the action they convey, showing your audience what you do and how you do it, and, as we’ve already touched upon, the emotions that we can capture in those photographs can show a client how they also might feel if they were to work with you.
Bonus Tip: Pair your professional photos with captions that tell a mini-story. Share a personal anecdote, highlight your ‘why’, or offer useful tips to do with your industry. Combining powerful visuals with engaging storytelling is a proven way to improve how much people retain of what you’re saying, meaning you’ll stick around in your ideal clients’ minds for longer.
Investing in your personal brand:
I think it’s fair to say, at this point, that it’s worth investing in more than just a basic headshot photograph. Personal brand photography which includes images of you and your work environment, how you interact with clients, and the positive impact you make on their lives can paint much more of a complete picture and resonate with your audience on a deeper level.
Professional photography is an investment into your brand and your connection with your clients. They’re more than just pretty pictures, you’re investing into a collection of valuable assets that can work for you for years to come.
