What Should I Wear to a Newborn Photoshoot?

I know it might be the last thing on your mind, to get dolled up for a photoshoot just a few days after giving birth, but you are an incredibly important part of your newborn baby’s biography so please come prepared to get involved!

Don’t worry, I don’t need you to get all dressed up for this one (although I do recommend a little make-up) and you definitely don’t need to be worrying about your post-birth body. The photographs that I’ll take during your newborn photoshoot will be entirely focused on the bond between you and your new baby.

First of all, your baby is going to be naked for most of the photoshoot, so in order to keep them comfortable, it’s going to be warm – very warm – in the studio. So please bear that in mind when you get dressed in the morning. Layers might be a good idea, so that you can add/remove clothing as required. Where possible, I’ll try and do the family photos at the start when you’re feeling at your freshest!

The most important thing from an aesthetic perspective is to ensure that you avoid wearing heavy patterns, emblems and slogans. They really can take away the timeless beauty of a family photograph.

I tend to default to dark colours for newborn photoshoots as it’s nice and flattering for mums who might not be feeling 100% post-birth. So pick something that’s dark in colour and that you feel comfortable in – even a simple strappy top will work fine! There won’t be much focus on your bottom half, so just aim for something that’s comfortable. If you’re feeling up for it, we can even get glammed up in some of the studio gowns. This is a particularly nice idea if you’ve already had your maternity photoshoot and would like some photographs with your new baby to match. For dads, a dark shirt, t-shirt or jumper will work great – or topless if you’re up for it!

I am absolutely able to work with light colours if you prefer, and this is something we can chat about during your consultation. If you’ve got a certain outfit that you want to have baby photographed in, then you’ll need to take that into consideration too. Where there’s siblings involved, make sure they are wearing something simple without slogans that goes with everyone else too.

And that’s about it! No one needs complicated in their lives straight after giving birth. Come to the studio, be comfortable and I’ll make sure you all look amazing!

Fantastic experience! I took my family for a shoot with Katie & she was amazing from start to finish. My toddler was a terror and my daughter a diva but some how she worked her magic and we have beautiful digital photos, prints and a lovely big frame for the wall. We had a lovely viewing where we were able to select the photos we wanted, we couldn’t possibly chose from them so we bought them all! 🙂 She made us all feel very welcome and my children and even my husband enjoyed the experience. Highly recommend! I will be back for more photos as my family grow. Thank you Katie
