What to Wear for an Autumn Family Photoshoot

Autumn is a magical time of year to head outdoors and update your family photos. As with any kind of photoshoot, what you wear can make or break your photos, so here’s my recommendations on what to wear for an autumn family photoshoot.

Firstly, there’s some basics when it comes to what you should and shouldn’t wear during any kind of family photoshoot. The idea of a family photoshoot is to capture memories of you and your family as you are now. What you wear (or perhaps don’t wear!) can mean that your photos draw attention away from the important part – you and your family (although I can already hear ‘oh I don’t mind the attention not being on me’ from lots of mums reading this -stop it!). So here’s a few generic tips to look great for your family photoshoots.

Try and stick to a smart casual dress code, but make sure you choose clothes that are comfortable and you feel confident in. Do a trial run with your outfit so you know you won’t be spending your time hitching up, fiddling with and covering up during your session.

In general you want to avoid really bright colours, strong patterns and text/emblems on your clothes. I really don’t want to see a giant ‘Just Do It’ badge on your kids at your family photoshoot. It might feel authentic to them at the time, but I can guarantee you’ll look back at your photos and wish they’d worn something nicer.

So now let’s get more specific about outdoor photoshoots amongst the gorgeous colours of the autumn.

One of the most important things to think about for an outdoor family photoshoot is the weather. We all know the weather in the UK can be a bit hit and miss, so you’ll need to come prepared during your session to try and avoid grumpy, cold children who no longer want to play ball. Layering is your friend here. Plan in warm layers such as jumpers, cardies, jackets, hats and scarves that you can add or remove as necessary. These will work much nicer than a big coat that hides the rest of the outfit you’ve put so much thought into!

Top tip: Make sure you’re all dressed for the same environment. E.g. don’t have one person in a shirt and others in jackets as it’ll just look odd – even if there is one member of the family who’s always out of sync temperature-wise!

What colours to wear for an autumn family photoshoot

There are some colours that work really well in autumn. Think nice, deep, autumny colours like mustard, dark red, purple, green, navy blue. Earthy colours will work nicely too. Try and avoid too much black – it looks far too dreary for this time of year!

Avoid the temptation for the family to all wear the same clothes – think complimentary, not matching! There’s a great website at https://coolors.co/ that can help you work out what colours go well together, if you’re not too sure what’ll work.

That’s about it!

I hope you’ve found this useful. I’d love to see some of your outfits in your autumn photos  – tag me in your Facebook or Instagram stories! Now you’ve got your outfits sorted, if you live in Gloucestershire and would like someone else to take away the stress of getting nice family photos of you and your kids this autumn, why not check out my outdoor photography session and book in a session?

Fantastic experience! I took my family for a shoot with Katie & she was amazing from start to finish. My toddler was a terror and my daughter a diva but some how she worked her magic and we have beautiful digital photos, prints and a lovely big frame for the wall. We had a lovely viewing where we were able to select the photos we wanted, we couldn’t possibly chose from them so we bought them all! 🙂 She made us all feel very welcome and my children and even my husband enjoyed the experience. Highly recommend! I will be back for more photos as my family grow. Thank you Katie
