Why You Should Let Your Baby Have Their Cake.. and Eat It Too!

After a year of exciting (and tear-jerking!) milestones, a first birthday cake smash is a fun and exciting way to celebrate your baby turning the big O-N-E.

For those not in the know, the idea of a cake smash is that you place a whole cake in front of your baby – and capture what happens next on camera!

Whilst the idea of capturing baby’s first taste of a yummy birthday cake on camera sounds like a fun idea, it doesn’t always lead to the desired result of happy, smiley photos.

That’s because, in the same way your baby might not have taken to the broccoli the first time you gave it to them, cake is a whole new alien concept for them and might not be welcomed with the same open arms that it probably would if were me sat in front of said cake! It can take 10 or more attempts for babies to accept new foods, and given that they’re unlikely to have had much in the way of sweet food by the time they turn one, it’s going to be a very new experience for them.

So if you want to make your baby’s cake smash photoshoot more enjoyable for them and less stressful for you, you can try introducing them to cake (and particularly buttercream) beforehand. It’ll help to make the experience less overwhelming for them and can also be a fun bonding experience for the two of you as you they explore the texture and taste of cake for the first time in a familiar environment. Believe it or not but the mess can also be a source of discomfort for your baby, so let them get used to a bit of messy play beforehand too!

Now before I get lynched and quoted as advising you to to add cake to your baby’s everyday diet, please remember that babies shouldn’t be consuming lots of sugar and that just a few tastes here and then should be enough. Sounds like a great excuse for mum to have a slice or two of cake to celebrate a whole year of motherhood to me!!

All this said, it really isn’t the end of the world if your baby doesn’t take to the cake on the day. We’ll get some gorgeous photos of them in their birthday outfit beforehand and then once the cake is gone, the clean-up in the adorable bubble bath is almost always a hit with little ones.

Fantastic experience! I took my family for a shoot with Katie & she was amazing from start to finish. My toddler was a terror and my daughter a diva but some how she worked her magic and we have beautiful digital photos, prints and a lovely big frame for the wall. We had a lovely viewing where we were able to select the photos we wanted, we couldn’t possibly chose from them so we bought them all! 🙂 She made us all feel very welcome and my children and even my husband enjoyed the experience. Highly recommend! I will be back for more photos as my family grow. Thank you Katie
