There’s not really a simple answer to this question. As you realise when you first have a baby and start looking to others for advice, babies are ALL different and what works for one won’t work for another one bit! However, as a general rule, when it comes to newborn photography, the earlier the better. Now no-one is going to tell you to get up out of the house in those precious first few days when you’re still getting to know each other, finding a feeding routine that works for you both and you are still in the raw stages of recovery from labour. But you may well see ‘perfect’ age ranges banded around like 5-14 days or 7-10 days.
The idea behind these age ranges is that newborn babies in their first few weeks of life will generally still be very sleepy and will love to be all curled up like they’ve been used to inside their mummy’s tummy. This makes it far easier for the newborn photographer to carefully pose your fast asleep, relaxed baby into all the cute positions that you’ll know and love. After just a few weeks, your new baby will start to become more alert, sleep less and they’ll begin to stretch out, making my work as your photographer that little bit harder – but, hey, that’s my job!
So don’t panic if you’ve left it a bit late for your newborn photoshoot. You can get month old babies who’ll sleep for Britain and five day olds who are more alert than me (which may not be saying much depending what time of day you catch me..). I’m not going to turn you away because your baby doesn’t fit into the magic two week window, but I will manage your expectations that you might not get a whole gallery of sleeping, perfectly posed baby photos. However, you will still a full gallery of beautiful photographs of your baby being their perfect little self.
